The 2026 BMW iX marks a significant update for the automaker’s flagship electric crossover, bridging the gap between its current EV lineup and the forthcoming Neue Klasse (New Class) generation of electric vehicles. Set to debut globally in early 2025, the refreshed iX offers improvements in battery efficiency, suspension tuning, and design, making it a compelling choice for luxury EV buyers.
Efficiency Boost and New Lineup
BMW reports that the 2026 iX is 10% more efficient than its predecessor. The lineup will feature three trims, starting with the base iX xDrive45, replacing the xDrive40 from earlier models. While the xDrive45’s battery specs remain under wraps, it’s expected to offer a larger pack and improved range over the outgoing model’s 71-kWh battery and 219-mile EPA-rated range.
Higher trims include the xDrive60, which builds on the 2025 xDrive50, and the top-tier M70, evolving from the M60. Both are rumored to feature larger battery packs and advanced energy-dense silicon anodes for faster charging and increased range. The xDrive60 could achieve an estimated 340 miles on 20-inch wheels, while the M70 may reach up to 315 miles with dual-motor all-wheel drive delivering over 600 horsepower.
Enhanced Driving Dynamics
BMW refined the iX’s suspension for 2026, aiming to address prior complaints about its handling and ride quality. The updated hydraulic dampers provide a smoother ride, while steering improvements deliver more distinct feedback in sport and comfort modes. Drivers can still engage “B mode” for maximum regenerative braking, which brings the iX to a near stop without using the brake pedal.
Fresh Features and Design
While the 2026 iX retains its signature polarizing kidney grille, the exterior design incorporates minor tweaks, blending eco-centric aesthetics with bold SUV styling. New friction-optimized wheel bearings and energy-efficient headlights contribute to extended range.
Inside, the optional M Sport package introduces M power seats with enhanced side bolstering, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and unique red brake calipers. Standard features across the lineup include adaptive cruise control, heated seats and steering wheel, a Harman Kardon sound system, and BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system.
A Step Toward Neue Klasse
Although the 2026 iX retains its 400-volt architecture, unlike Neue Klasse vehicles’ 800-volt systems, it incorporates key advancements like silicon anodes, setting the stage for future innovations. The 2026 iX will be available in the second quarter of 2025, offering a transitional yet advanced EV option as BMW refines its electrified future.
