JFK Expands EV Charging with New Fast-Charge Hub

Finding a place to charge electric vehicles in New York City will soon become easier. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced the addition of a new fast-charging station at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport. This project, led by Brooklyn-based Revel, will significantly expand the airport’s EV infrastructure.

Major Expansion at JFK

The new charging station, set to open in early 2025, will bring 24 additional fast chargers to JFK. Located in the airport’s west cell phone lot, now renamed For Hire Vehicle Hold Lot 1 West, this 10,000-square-foot facility will more than double the airport’s charging capacity. JFK currently has 22 chargers, and this new station will increase the total to 46, addressing the growing need for EV infrastructure.

Designed for Accessibility and Convenience

The station will operate 24/7, making it accessible not just to rideshare drivers but also to the general public. The location is easy to reach via the Van Wyck Expressway or the Belt Parkway, ensuring convenience for both airport visitors and local drivers. Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole emphasized the agency’s commitment to clean energy and sustainability, stating, “Supporting the shift to clean energy at our facilities is a priority. Collaborating with Revel helps make EV charging convenient and widely available.”

A Broader Vision for New York’s Airports

JFK is not the only airport getting a major EV upgrade. A similar charging station with 48 fast chargers is planned for LaGuardia Airport, expected to launch later in 2025. These developments mark a significant step toward electrifying the transportation infrastructure at New York’s busiest travel hubs.

Meeting Strong Demand for EV Chargers

Officials at the Port Authority have noted a surge in demand for EV charging at JFK. According to Rick Cotton, executive director of the Port Authority, the existing chargers are heavily utilized. “We’re excited to respond to this demand by increasing our capacity to accommodate more EVs,” Cotton said.

Revel’s Role in Electrifying Rideshare

Revel CEO and co-founder Frank Reig highlighted the importance of having ample charging options near airports, stating, “Electrifying rideshare isn’t possible without abundant charging near airports. Our partnership with the Port Authority ensures JFK and LaGuardia will feature some of the largest public fast-charging stations in New York.”

With these upgrades, JFK and LaGuardia are positioned to support the rapidly growing EV market, making air travel greener and more sustainable for all.
