The Issue: A Silent Safety Concern
General Motors (GM) is recalling 7,606 units of its 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV. The problem? These vehicles may fail to meet federal requirements for pedestrian warning sounds. The recall stems from incorrect software in the body control modules, which causes the pedestrian warning system to emit sounds at volumes below mandated levels.
Quiet Cars, Big Risks
Federal “quiet car” rules were introduced to address safety concerns for electric and hybrid vehicles. Without engine noise, these vehicles can be too silent at low speeds, posing risks to pedestrians. Although proposed in 2010, these regulations weren’t finalized until 2018 and only took effect in 2021. Automakers must now ensure their vehicles emit adequate warning sounds to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141.
The Fix: A Dealer Visit Required
While the issue is software-based, GM cannot resolve it with an over-the-air update. Owners will need to visit dealerships, where technicians will update the body control module free of charge. GM plans to notify affected owners by mail starting January 27, 2025.
What’s Not Affected?
Interestingly, earlier models of the Equinox EV from the 2024 model year are unaffected by this recall. These vehicles already meet the federal standards for pedestrian warning systems.
A Bright Spot for the Equinox EV
Despite this recall, the Equinox EV has remained a promising contender in the EV market. For the 2025 model year, GM delivered on its value promise with a $34,995 base version offering an impressive 319 miles of EPA-estimated range. This combination of affordability and range makes it a strong competitor in the electric SUV segment.
Final Thoughts
While recalls can be a setback, GM’s swift action ensures compliance with safety standards and protects pedestrians. The Equinox EV continues to represent GM’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, even as it works to address these growing pains.
If you own an affected model, don’t delay—schedule your dealership visit to ensure your Equinox EV is up to code and as safe as it is silent.
