Charging a Non-Tesla EV? Here’s What You Need to Know

Fast Charging Isn’t Always Plug-and-Play

For Tesla owners, charging has always been simple—pull up to a Supercharger, plug in, and you’re good to go. But for non-Tesla EV drivers, using public fast chargers can be more complicated. Different networks, payment methods, and apps can turn a quick charging stop into a confusing process.

Do You Need an App or a Credit Card?

Unlike Tesla’s seamless experience, many non-Tesla fast chargers require a bit more planning. Some allow tap-to-pay with a credit card, but not all. Many networks, like Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint, recommend using their apps or RFID cards for a smoother experience.

Here’s what you should do before heading to a fast charger:

  • Check the charging network – Use apps like PlugShare to see which chargers are on your route.
  • Download the right app – Many networks require an account and app activation before you can start charging.
  • Bring a backup payment option – Some card readers don’t always work, so having the app or an RFID card can save you time.
  • Try charging before your trip – Testing a fast charger near home will help you avoid surprises on the road.

Which Charging Networks Work Best?

Electrify America and EVgo are two of the largest public fast-charging networks in the U.S. Many newer EVs, including the Acura ZDX, support Plug & Charge with these networks, allowing for automatic billing—similar to Tesla’s Supercharger system.

However, not all locations have reliable service. Some users report frequent issues with card readers or broken chargers, so checking reviews on PlugShare before your trip is a smart move.

EV Charging Is Evolving

While Tesla’s Supercharger network remains the gold standard, charging for non-Tesla EVs is improving. More networks are adopting Plug & Charge, and government funding is expanding fast-charging access nationwide.

Still, public EV charging isn’t as seamless as it should be. Until the industry standardizes payment methods and improves reliability, a little preparation can make all the difference on your next road trip.
