A Surprising Driver Behind EV Sales
Forget torque and tech specs—it’s all about the dogs.
As EV growth slows and price concerns rise, one unexpected group is keeping the momentum alive: pet owners. Features like “Pet Comfort” modes are making EVs a must-have for dog-loving drivers.
In Roseville, Minnesota, the local fire department chose a Rivian SUV specifically for Ashes, their therapy dog. Assistant Chief Niel Sjostrom said the Rivian’s climate control was a deal-sealer: “Now, I don’t leave here without bringing her.”
Why EVs Win for Pet Comfort
Unlike gas-powered cars, EVs can run climate control systems while parked—without idling or wasting fuel.
Lucid calls its version “Creature Comfort,” while Tesla, Rivian, and Polestar all offer variations. These systems keep pets cool in summer and warm in winter, all while you’re inside grabbing a latte or groceries.
Even better? These settings include alerts if temperatures rise or batteries dip, and screens display messages like, “Don’t worry, my human will be back soon.”
Real People, Real Pet Priorities
Laura Westfall switched from Tesla to Rivian because of her golden retriever, Huckleberry. “It’s been a game-changer,” she said.
Kim Staack Read gave up her gas-powered Mercedes for a Rivian—just for her rescue dog, Raji. Now they’ve road-tripped across 47 states.
The Chuo family owns three EVs—Hyundai, Tesla, and Rivian—and their pup Cuddles rides in all of them. “She basically never stays home alone,” says Maxwell Chuo.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
Pet ownership in the U.S. is booming. Nearly half of households have a dog. Among Rivian owners, it’s closer to two-thirds.
Hyundai says daily pet rides in its EVs are nearly double those in its gas models. GM sees 1.8 million monthly remote climate activations—many likely for furry passengers.
The Bottom Line
In the race for EV adoption, comfort isn’t just for humans anymore.
Add in rising pet ownership and a loyal, higher-earning demographic, and it’s clear: EVs with pet perks aren’t just a trend—they’re a tail-wagging strategy.
