Charlotte Unveils Affordable EV Carshare Program

Affordable EV Access for Charlotte Residents

Charlotte is stepping into the future with the launch of Carolina Carshare, an electric vehicle carshare program designed to offer affordable, sustainable transportation to underserved communities. The initiative, led by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE), brings reliable, eco-friendly mobility options directly to Peppertree Apartments, a newly renovated affordable housing complex located in one of the city’s Corridors of Opportunity.

Convenient and Accessible EV Rentals

The Carolina Carshare program features Chevy Bolt EVs, available for residents to reserve through a convenient app. For just $5 per hour or $50 per day, residents can use the cars for daily errands, medical appointments, or commutes. The price includes insurance and 24/7 member support. The apartments are equipped with charging infrastructure, making it easy for residents to access electric transportation without the burden of car ownership.

A Step Towards Sustainable Mobility

Mayor Vi Lyles highlighted that this program aligns perfectly with the city’s sustainability goals. “By investing in electric vehicle access, we’re giving families the tools to access better jobs, education, and services,” she said. The project supports Charlotte’s Strategic Energy Action Plan (SEAP), aiming to reduce carbon emissions and become a low-carbon city by 2050.

Collaborative Effort for Lasting Impact

Charlotte was chosen as one of only 13 cities nationwide to host the Community Car Share pilot, a program developed by Forth to increase transportation access in affordable housing while cutting down on carbon emissions. A coalition of national and local partners, including Centralina Clean Fuels Coalition and DreamKey Partners, supports the initiative.

Expanding Access to Electric Mobility

This carshare program is the first of four planned locations in Charlotte, with expansion continuing through 2025. The initiative provides residents with both affordable EV access and charging infrastructure, making it a vital step toward greater mobility and environmental sustainability in the city.
