Things to Know Before Charging Your Kia at a Tesla Supercharger

Kia EVs Now Plug Into Tesla’s Network

Big news for Kia EV drivers: the EV6, EV9, and Niro EV now have access to Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network, opening up 21,500+ new fast-charging locations. This means more freedom on the road and fewer detours to find a working charger.

But how well does it actually work? We tested it using a 2024 Kia EV9 and found some important things you should know before pulling up to that sleek red-and-white charger.

Real-World Charging—What to Expect

Using a NACS-to-CCS adapter and the Tesla app, the EV9 connected without much hassle. However, charging speeds were lower than expected. The Supercharger maxed out at 84.3 kW, far from the EV9’s 210 kW peak and below its usual speeds on Electrify America or EVgo.

From 12% to 50% charge took 30 minutes, adding 116 miles of range. By comparison, the same car added 224 miles in 24 minutes on a 350-kW charger.

Adapter and App Matters

Kia advises using only Kia-approved NACS adapters to avoid potential warranty issues. Some owners who purchased an EV9 or EV6 after September 4, 2024, may receive one for free.

Payment now works via the Kia Access app, though this test used the Tesla app, which required a bit of trial and error. Infotainment updates to filter Superchargers are coming soon.

Why It’s Still a Win

While current Superchargers can’t fully tap into Kia’s 800-volt charging tech, faster V4 Superchargers are on the way. These new stations will allow the EV9 to reach its full potential.

Even now, Superchargers offer a crucial backup during road trips, especially in crowded cities or when other chargers are down.

More Options, More Flexibility

Charging at a Supercharger costs roughly $0.46/kWh, similar to other networks. While not the fastest route today, Tesla access gives Kia drivers more reliable options and greater freedom to plan routes their way.

And sometimes, having more charging choices is more powerful than charging speed alone.
