Small, But Not Just a Concept Anymore
NIU is moving fast. The scooter brand’s electric microcar, the NIUMM, is officially headed for production.
Unveiled earlier this year, the two-seater made another splash at EICMA 2025, where NIU confirmed it is finishing homologation—the final regulatory step before it can hit public roads.
Swappable Scooter Batteries, Same Simplicity
Here’s what makes it brilliant: the NIUMM uses the same batteries as NIU’s NQi-series scooters. Two batteries give it a 43-mile range and a top speed of 28 mph, matching the L6e quadricycle class limit.
Need to go farther? There’s space for two more batteries, nearly doubling the range without adding complexity. Charging is quick and familiar for existing NIU users, making the transition from scooter to microcar seamless.
Built for Cities, Not Speed
The NIUMM falls into the L6e category, which prioritizes lightness and efficiency over speed. These microcars are ideal for crowded European streets and short urban trips. Even better, they can be driven with a moped license in many countries.
That accessibility, combined with affordability and ease of use, makes the NIUMM appealing for young drivers, retirees, and commuters tired of full-sized car headaches.
Why It Could Actually Take Off
Compact EVs like the Citroën Ami, Renault Twizy, Microlino, and Eli Zero have already proven that small can be successful. They’re quirky, practical, and increasingly popular in Europe’s car-light future.
Now, with NIU’s existing scooter ecosystem and proven battery tech, the NIUMM could scale even faster—and more affordably—than its rivals.
So, When Can You Get One?
Pricing and launch dates are still under wraps, but momentum is building. NIU says production is close, and early testing is nearly complete.
If all goes to plan, the NIUMM could be the next big thing in small urban mobility—simple, efficient, and built for the new era of electric cities.
