VW Rolls Out Gen.Urban on Real City Streets
Volkswagen Group is taking autonomous mobility to the next level with the launch of real-world testing for Gen.Urban, its self-driving research vehicle. After intensive trials, the Gen.Urban is now driving through the streets of Wolfsburg, Germany.
This phase focuses on more than just tech performance — it’s about how real people experience autonomy.
Designed Around People, Not Drivers
Gen.Urban is built from the ground up without a steering wheel or pedals. Instead, passengers sit up front, while a trained safety driver rides beside them, ready to take over using a joystick control panel if needed.
The vehicle serves as a rolling lab, testing how riders interact with a self-driving pod. The key question: Do they feel safe, comfortable, and in control — even when they’re not driving?
Personalized Journeys, Powered by AI
Before even stepping in, passengers can customize their ride via an app or onboard interface. Cabin temperature, ambient lighting, and seating position all adjust automatically.
Once inside, AI adapts the digital cabin — including lights, sounds, and the wide front display — to the user’s preferred theme. It’s designed to be relaxing, productive, or entertaining, depending on your needs.
Testing Real Traffic, Not Simulations
The nearly 10-kilometer test route loops through Wolfsburg’s city center. It includes intersections, roundabouts, construction zones, residential streets, and factory areas — a perfect sample of everyday driving conditions.
Each test drive lasts about 20 minutes and is currently limited to Volkswagen Group employees.
Why This Test Matters
Dr. Nikolai Ardey, Head of VW Group Innovation, says trust is everything. The goal is to shape future mobility around real human needs — not just futuristic tech.
With Gen.Urban, VW isn’t just testing autonomy. They’re redefining how we interact with cars when no one’s driving.
Setting the Stage for an Autonomous Future
Gen.Urban is more than a tech demo — it’s a strategic blueprint. The data collected from this trial will help shape how VW designs interiors, digital interfaces, and entire vehicle platforms across its brands.
As the lines blur between transportation and digital experience, Volkswagen is making it clear: autonomy isn’t just about driving itself — it’s about reimagining the entire journey.
