Hyundai is preparing a major global debut at the 2026 New York Auto Show, and the company says it’s bringing “something big.” The teaser already sparked speculation across the EV and SUV world.
Although Hyundai hasn’t revealed the model yet, several clues suggest the brand may introduce a rugged off-road SUV — possibly electrified.
Hyundai’s Teaser Points to an Adventure-Focused SUV
Hyundai recently shared a short teaser hinting at a new vehicle reveal during the New York Auto Show media day. The announcement follows a similar tease last year before the Los Angeles Auto Show.
At that event, Hyundai revealed the Crater Concept, a bold off-road SUV created by the Hyundai America Technical Center in California.
The concept previewed the future direction of Hyundai’s Extra Rugged Terrain (XRT) lineup. Current XRT versions already exist on vehicles like the IONIQ 5, Santa Cruz and Palisade, but Hyundai wants to push the idea further.
The Crater concept featured an aggressive off-road stance, large 33-inch all-terrain tires, increased ground clearance and protective skid plates. It also included specialized terrain drive modes for snow, sand and mud.
In short, Hyundai designed it to go far beyond typical SUV capabilities.
Hyundai’s XRT Strategy Is Getting Bigger
Hyundai executives recently hinted that XRT will evolve beyond a simple trim package.
Instead, the company plans to turn XRT into a broader capability-focused identity. That could eventually become its own performance-style off-road lineup.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Design North America opened a new creative studio called “The Sandbox.” The facility focuses on developing adventure vehicles, outdoor gear and rugged mobility concepts.
Because of this strategy shift, the upcoming reveal may represent the first production-ready XRT vehicle.
Could It Be an Electric Off-Road SUV?
The powertrain remains a mystery for now. However, electrification seems highly likely.
Hyundai continues expanding its electric lineup and recently outlined plans to launch 36 new or refreshed vehicles across North America within four years. The lineup will include EVs, hybrids, SUVs, trucks and commercial vehicles.
If the new model follows the Crater concept’s direction, it could compete with off-road icons like the Ford Bronco or Jeep Wrangler — but with modern electrified power.
Another possibility also remains on the table: Hyundai’s long-rumored mid-size pickup truck for the U.S. market.
The Reveal Happens This Week
Hyundai will officially unveil the mystery vehicle April 1 during the New York Auto Show media day. The livestream begins at 9:55 AM ET on Hyundai USA’s YouTube channel.
One thing Hyundai clarified: despite the April 1 timing, the reveal is not an April Fools’ joke.
The only joke might be a separate teaser Hyundai posted in Korea showing a stretch-limousine version of the tiny Casper Electric EV.
