The Freelander name is making a comeback, but this time it’s going electric. Jaguar Land Rover and Chery have unveiled the new Freelander EV SUV, a rugged vehicle designed for global markets and modern electric powertrains.
The revival of the once-popular off-roader signals a fresh push into the growing electric SUV segment.
A Legendary Off-Road Name Comes Back
The original Land Rover Freelander debuted in 1997 and quickly became one of Europe’s most successful 4×4 vehicles. For years, it ranked among the continent’s best-selling off-road SUVs.
However, Jaguar Land Rover ended production in 2015 as the company shifted toward higher-end models like the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque.
Now the name returns with a completely new mission.
The reborn Freelander launches as part of a joint venture between Jaguar Land Rover and Chinese automaker Chery. The new electric SUV officially debuted in China on March 31 and will become the first vehicle under the newly revived Freelander brand.
Designed as a Global Electric SUV
Although the vehicle makes its first appearance in China, the Freelander EV is not limited to one region.
Company executives confirmed that international versions are already under development. After its Chinese launch, the SUV is expected to expand into other major markets, including Europe.
The project focuses on building a vehicle suited for worldwide use rather than simply exporting a regional model. Engineers have already tested the SUV extensively in Europe to ensure it meets strict safety and performance standards.
The vehicle will also comply with the latest Euro NCAP safety protocols.
Built on an Advanced 800V Platform
Under the skin, the Freelander EV rides on Chery’s advanced 800-volt vehicle architecture. This platform allows the SUV to support several powertrain configurations.
Planned options include:
- Fully electric
- Plug-in hybrid
- Extended-range electric
This flexibility allows the brand to adapt the vehicle for different markets and charging infrastructures.
Production will take place at Chery-JLR manufacturing facilities in Changshu, China.
A New Brand Strategy Begins
The Freelander EV marks the beginning of an ambitious expansion plan.
The newly formed Freelander brand intends to launch a new model roughly every six months over the next five years. This aggressive schedule aims to build a full lineup of electrified SUVs.
The first model will enter a highly competitive market, facing rivals from Chinese brands already producing advanced electric off-road vehicles.
Still, with a recognizable name and modern electric technology, Freelander’s return could reshape how this classic SUV brand fits into the EV era.
