BMW Brings Rimac Into the i7 EV Story
BMW is giving its flagship electric sedan a serious upgrade. The automaker has confirmed a new partnership with Rimac Technology to develop the high-voltage battery system for the next all-electric BMW i7.
That matters because this is not a small hardware tweak. Instead, BMW is using the project to bring its sixth-generation eDrive battery tech into one of its most important EVs. As a result, the upcoming i7 should deliver more range, faster charging, and better overall energy performance.
Gen6 Battery Tech Is the Real Headline
At the center of the update is BMW’s new Gen6 battery technology. It uses 4695 lithium-ion cylindrical cells, which offer 20% higher volumetric energy density than the prismatic cells used in BMW’s earlier Gen5 setup.
In simple terms, BMW can pack more energy into a similar space. That should help the new i7 travel farther on a charge while also improving efficiency.
BMW says the battery combines these newer Gen6 cells with an established Gen5 module design. So, rather than starting from scratch, the company is blending new chemistry with proven packaging.
Faster Charging, Bigger Luxury EV Ambitions
BMW also says the new battery will increase charging performance. That means shorter charging stops for drivers and a more competitive luxury EV package.
Rimac Technology will build the high-voltage battery system in Croatia before shipping it to BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Germany, where the 7 Series is assembled.
The partnership also shows how fast Rimac’s role is expanding. The company built its name around extreme performance machines. Now, however, it is stepping deeper into large-scale supply work for major global automakers.
Full Reveal Lands April 22
BMW will officially unveil the new 7 Series on April 22 during simultaneous events in Beijing and New York City.
That launch could mark an important moment for BMW’s EV strategy. The i7 already sits at the top of the brand’s electric luxury lineup. Now, with Rimac-backed battery tech and BMW’s Gen6 architecture, it is shaping up to become a stronger statement about where the company is heading next.
