A Budget EV That Feels Anything But Cheap
BYD has officially revealed the new Sealion 05 EV, and it’s aiming straight at the value sweet spot. This compact electric SUV packs serious tech, strong performance, and a starting price around $16,000.
It arrives with both EV and plug-in hybrid versions, plus BYD’s latest driver-assistance upgrades. Even more surprising, it undercuts rivals by a huge margin while still offering premium features.
Smart Driving Tech Comes Standard
The Sealion 05 EV is equipped with BYD’s “God’s Eye” driver-assist system. It uses multiple cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors to enable highway assistance, parking automation, and active safety features.
Higher-end setups include roof-mounted LiDAR and more advanced DiPilot systems, pushing the SUV closer to semi-autonomous capability in everyday driving.
Fast Charging and Strong Performance
Under the hood, the all-electric version comes with rear-mounted motors producing up to 321 hp. Buyers can also choose a plug-in hybrid variant powered by BYD’s latest DM-i system.
The EV supports fast charging speeds up to 156 kW, allowing a 30% to 80% recharge in about 18 minutes. Reports also suggest ultra-fast charging tech could dramatically cut downtime in real-world use.
Tech-Filled Interior With a Twist
Inside, the Sealion 05 EV features a modern dual-screen setup with a large floating central display and a digital driver cluster. Physical controls remain on the steering wheel and center stack for easier use.
But the standout feature is unexpected—a built-in refrigerator, adding convenience rarely seen in this price range.
Practical Size With Big Space
Despite its compact footprint, the SUV offers impressive storage. It includes a 600-liter trunk that expands to 1,460 liters with seats folded, plus a 110-liter front trunk.
Compared to larger rivals like the Tesla Model Y, it’s smaller in size but aggressively priced, making it a major disruptor in the affordable EV segment.
