Affordable Name Goes Electric
Volkswagen is transforming one of its most recognizable budget models, the Jetta, into a new electric SUV aimed at China’s fast-growing EV market. The move reuses the Jetta nameplate—long known for affordable sedans—to launch a low-cost electric vehicle lineup under a new sub-brand.
The concept, called the Jetta X, was revealed ahead of the Beijing Auto Show and signals Volkswagen’s push to compete directly with Chinese EV leaders in the entry-level segment.
A New Budget EV Brand Strategy
In China, the Jetta name will no longer just represent a sedan but a full sub-brand of affordable new energy vehicles. Volkswagen plans to launch four models under this badge by 2028, including both plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles.
The strategy is designed to strengthen Volkswagen’s position in the budget EV space, where domestic brands dominate with aggressive pricing and rapid product cycles.
Jetta X Electric SUV Concept
The first preview of this new direction is the Jetta X concept SUV, which features a more rugged design language called “Modern Robust.” It is intended to appeal to younger buyers looking for an affordable but stylish electric SUV.
While technical details are limited, Volkswagen confirmed that the first production model from the Jetta EV lineup is expected to launch later this year in China.
Part of a Bigger China Push
Volkswagen says the Jetta EV project is part of a broader expansion in China, where it plans to release more than 20 electrified models by 2026 and up to 50 by 2030 across its brands.
At the same event, the company also revealed additional EV concepts developed with local partners, highlighting how important the Chinese market has become to its global strategy.
Global Divide in EV Strategy
While China is getting new low-cost electric models, Volkswagen’s approach elsewhere is different. In the US, the company has scaled back some EV plans in favor of traditional SUVs, showing how regional markets are shaping very different product strategies.
For now, the Jetta EV SUV is expected to remain focused on China, with no confirmed plans for international release.
