BYD reveals new electric sedan and sports car

BYD expands beyond off-road SUVs

BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand, known for rugged off-road SUVs, is expanding into new territory with the reveal of its first electric sedan lineup and a low-slung sports car at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The brand is part of BYD’s growing multi-brand strategy, joining Denza, Yangwang, Dynasty, and Ocean series as it pushes into more premium and performance-focused segments.

Fang Cheng Bao currently focuses on high-end SUVs like the Bao 5 and Bao 8, along with newer family-oriented models such as the Tai 3 and Tai 7. The new direction marks a shift from purely off-road capability toward broader luxury and performance offerings.

Formula S sedan family revealed

The highlight of the reveal is the new Formula S series, which introduces BYD’s first luxury electric sedans. The lineup includes three variants: a standard three-box sedan, a GT shooting brake version, and a larger flagship sedan called the Formula SL.

All models are large vehicles measuring over 5 meters in length with a 3-meter wheelbase, designed with what BYD calls a “golden ratio body.” The styling is inspired by a “hunting leopard” stance, featuring sharp proportions and a low, aggressive profile aimed at blending luxury with performance character.

Formula X sports car targets supercar segment

Alongside the sedans, BYD previewed the Formula X, a two-seat production sports car positioned at the top of the new lineup. The company claims the design is 80% identical to the production version, suggesting it is close to final form rather than a distant concept.

The Formula X continues BYD’s push into performance EV territory, joining a growing wave of Chinese automakers targeting established sports car and supercar segments traditionally dominated by European brands.

Design and launch timeline

The Formula S models feature dramatic styling details including “Cheetah Eyes” headlights, “Infinity Ring” taillights, and carbon fiber construction aimed at reducing weight. BYD says the entire Formula S lineup is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2026, while the Formula X sports car is planned for release shortly after.

Bigger picture

Fang Cheng Bao’s expansion signals BYD’s broader strategy of moving beyond SUVs into full luxury and performance EV categories. With sedans and sports cars now entering its portfolio, the brand is positioning itself as a direct competitor in segments previously dominated by legacy performance automakers.
