XPeng unveils new flagship SUV
XPeng officially revealed the GX, a new full-size six-seat flagship SUV at the Beijing Auto Show. Starting at 399,800 yuan (~$58,000), it is the company’s most premium model yet, designed to compete directly with high-end SUVs from Li Auto, AITO, and NIO while undercutting European luxury pricing by a wide margin.
The GX also marks XPeng’s strongest push into the premium segment, combining advanced EV architecture with next-generation autonomous driving hardware and luxury-focused design.
Long range and dual powertrains
The all-electric version of the GX delivers up to 750 km (466 miles) of range using an 800-volt silicon carbide platform with 5C fast charging capability. XPeng is also offering an extended-range EREV version that delivers 430 km of pure electric driving and up to 1,585 km total range, targeting long-distance usability without range anxiety.
Both versions come with all-wheel drive, positioning the GX as a performance-focused family SUV with strong efficiency and flexibility.
Advanced autonomous driving hardware
The GX is built on XPeng’s SEPA 3.0 platform and is described as “robotaxi-ready” thanks to its second-generation VLA autonomous system. It uses four proprietary Turing AI chips delivering up to 3,000 TOPS of computing power.
A key highlight is the steer-by-wire system co-developed with Bosch, removing the mechanical link between steering wheel and wheels. XPeng says this enables faster response, higher precision, and better integration with future autonomous driving systems.
The SUV also features a multi-layer safety architecture, including 720-degree collision protection and redundant systems covering steering, braking, power, and communication.
Luxury interior and design focus
At over 5.2 meters long, the GX is larger than a Range Rover and uses a six-seat 2+2+2 layout. XPeng focused heavily on interior comfort, adding features like reclining seats, ambient lighting, AI-dimming privacy glass, and a built-in car fridge.
Despite its size and tech loadout, the GX maintains a low drag coefficient and premium styling, with optional high-end paint finishes using up to 15 layers.
Bigger picture
The GX represents XPeng’s most serious attempt yet to break into the premium EV market. While its technology and pricing are highly competitive globally, the Chinese market remains extremely price-sensitive and crowded with strong rivals.
XPeng is betting that its combination of long range, advanced autonomy, and luxury-level features will finally push it into the upper tier of China’s EV market, especially as it expands its broader AI and mobility ecosystem.
