Electric GTI Era Begins
Volkswagen’s first electric GTI leaked online just before its official reveal, giving fans an early look at the upcoming ID. Polo GTI. The EV hot hatch keeps classic GTI styling cues alive with the iconic red stripe across the front, sporty wheels, aggressive bumpers, and a redesigned interior focused on performance driving. Volkswagen says the ID. Polo GTI represents the next step for the GTI badge as the company shifts deeper into electric vehicles.
The standard ID. Polo GTI will use a front-mounted electric motor producing 222 horsepower along with a 52.2 kWh battery pack. Volkswagen estimates up to 282 miles of WLTP driving range, making it both sporty and practical. Inside, the EV features a 13-inch infotainment display, a 10-inch digital driver screen, and physical buttons under the screen, something many drivers have been asking Volkswagen to bring back.
More Power Coming Soon
Volkswagen also confirmed a more powerful Clubsport version is on the way. According to company executives, the upgraded model could produce around 282 horsepower, giving it performance closer to modern gasoline hot hatches. The company is reportedly developing simulated paddle shifting similar to Hyundai’s N performance EVs, designed to recreate the feel of changing gears in a gas-powered sports car.
The electric GTI will also include Volkswagen’s “Retro Mode,” which transforms the digital gauges into displays inspired by the original Mk1 Golf GTI from the 1970s. Volkswagen clearly wants to mix classic GTI personality with modern EV technology, helping longtime fans transition into the electric era without losing the fun driving experience the badge is known for.
Pricing and Launch Details
Volkswagen recently opened orders for the standard ID. Polo in Germany, with pricing starting around €25,000 for the base model and nearly €34,000 for higher trims. The ID. Polo GTI is expected to cost around €38,000, while the Clubsport version could climb above €45,000 due to its added performance upgrades and exclusive features.
The official debut takes place on May 15, but the leaked images already generated major attention online. Volkswagen hopes the ID. Polo GTI can become the electric replacement for one of Europe’s most famous hot hatchbacks while helping the brand compete against performance EVs from Hyundai and other rivals entering the growing electric sports car market.
