China’s ultra-affordable EV market just got a new star. Chery’s newly launched QQ3 electric car has already attracted nearly 57,000 orders within its first month, showing how strong demand remains for low-cost electric vehicles.
With a starting price around $8,500, the compact EV enters the market as a direct rival to popular budget models like BYD’s Seagull.
A New Budget EV Shakes Up China’s Market
Chery officially opened orders for the QQ3 electric hatchback earlier this month. The company initially announced a starting price of 68,920 yuan (about $10,000).
However, Chery later introduced a limited-time launch offer that lowered the base price to 58,900 yuan, roughly $8,500.
The aggressive pricing quickly caught buyers’ attention. Within weeks, the automaker reported 56,879 orders, signaling strong demand in China’s rapidly growing entry-level EV segment.
Range Options Up to 420 km
Buyers can choose between two battery sizes, allowing the QQ3 to target different price points.
The available options include:
- 29.48 kWh battery with up to 310 km (192 miles) of CLTC range
- 41.28 kWh battery with up to 420 km (260 miles) of CLTC range
Charging is relatively quick for a vehicle in this price class. According to Chery, the battery can recharge from 30% to 80% in about 16.5 minutes using fast charging.
Two Power Levels Available
Despite its low price, the QQ3 offers two performance configurations.
The entry-level version produces 55 kW (about 77 horsepower) with 90 Nm of torque. A higher trim boosts output to 90 kW (about 120 horsepower) and 115 Nm of torque.
All versions use a rear-wheel-drive layout, which is unusual for small budget EVs.
A Tech-Focused Interior
Inside, the QQ3 includes Chery’s Lingxi Smart Cabin system.
The dashboard features an 8.8-inch digital instrument display paired with a 12.8-inch infotainment screen. Higher trims upgrade to a larger 15.6-inch 2.5K touchscreen.
Powered by a Qualcomm 8155 chip, the system supports numerous apps and digital services, including WeChat mini-programs that allow passengers to access entertainment features such as karaoke and gaming.
Compact Size With Practical Space
The QQ3 remains a compact city EV, measuring 4,195 mm long, 1,811 mm wide, and 1,573 mm tall. Its 2,700 mm wheelbase helps maximize interior space.
Passengers in the rear benefit from up to 977 mm of legroom, giving the small EV surprising practicality.
The car also offers Falcon 500 driver-assistance features, including highway navigation assist.
With thousands of early orders already secured, the QQ3 shows how powerful the combination of low price and modern tech can be in today’s EV market.
