Battery Issue Sparks Recall
Audi is recalling 4,616 plug-in hybrid vehicles in the U.S. due to a potential fire risk from defective battery modules. The recall affects specific 2022 and 2023 Audi Q5 plug-in hybrid crossovers and 2022 Audi A7 plug-in hybrid hatchbacks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain manufacturing deviations may have caused overheating in some battery modules.
Audi estimates that only 1% of recalled vehicles may have the defect, and no injuries, crashes, or fires have been reported in the U.S.
Safety Measures in Progress
Audi is working on a solution, but the fix won’t be ready until the second quarter of 2025. The automaker plans to release a software update to diagnose affected vehicles. Dealers will install the software free of charge once it’s available.
For vehicles equipped with online data monitoring, Audi will remotely check battery modules and advise owners to avoid charging their cars if a defect is detected. For those without this monitoring capability, owners are being instructed upfront not to charge their vehicles until repairs are finalized.
What Owners Should Do
Audi will mail initial recall notifications starting January 24, 2025. A second notification will follow once the software remedy is available. Owners seeking more information can contact Audi’s customer service at 1-800-253-2834, referencing recall number 93AA.
A Shared History and Common Challenges
Both the Q5 and A7 plug-in hybrids feature a shared powertrain. The Q5 offers 23 miles of electric range, while the A7 boasts a slightly higher range of 26 miles. These models have been praised for their drivability since their respective launches in 2020 and 2021.
However, battery recalls are becoming a challenging trend for automakers. Last month, Jaguar decided to buy back nearly 3,000 I-Pace crossovers due to unresolved battery fire risks. Similarly, General Motors replaced numerous Chevrolet Bolt EV battery packs after a massive recall.
A Costly Lesson for EVs
As electric and hybrid vehicles grow in popularity, battery safety remains a critical focus. While Audi’s swift action minimizes risk, the issue highlights the complexity and cost of addressing battery-related recalls. Owners are advised to stay informed and follow all safety instructions until the issue is resolved.
