Battery Swap in 100 Seconds? China Just Did It

Battery Swap in 100 Seconds? China Just Did It

Charge Time? Forget It. Swap Instead.

Charging an EV in 30 minutes is old news. In China, it’s now possible to “refuel” your EV in just 100 seconds. How? Swappable battery technology from CATL. The Chinese battery giant has introduced Choco-SEB, a modular battery system that’s shaking up the industry.

Instead of waiting to charge, drivers pull into a swap station and roll out with a fresh, fully charged battery—faster than a coffee break.

How the Choco-SEB System Works

Choco-SEB batteries are flexible and built for speed. Drivers can swap in one, two, or three battery blocks depending on the vehicle and desired range. Compact EVs can go up to 311 miles on a swap, while midsize vehicles stretch to 373 miles.

These batteries use a mix of lithium iron phosphate and nickel manganese cobalt, combining safety with high energy density—160 Wh/kg and 325 Wh/L. This blend keeps performance up and risk down.

Already on the Road

The first EV to feature this tech is the Changan Oshan 520. Priced at around $23,100, it offers a 320-mile range. It’s already turning heads in China, with 1,000+ units delivered and 15,000+ orders placed.

CATL has also launched 34 swap stations in Chongqing, with over 50 expected by year-end. By the end of 2025, the goal is 1,000 stations across 31 cities.

A Global Game-Changer?

Right now, swappable batteries are booming in Asia. CATL is working with automakers like NIO, GAC, Chery, and BAIC. With 29% of the global EV battery market, it’s setting the pace.

In the U.S., adoption faces roadblocks: compatibility, infrastructure, and public mindset. Still, with partners like Stellantis piloting swaps in Spain, interest is rising.

Why It Matters

Long charge times are one of EVs’ biggest flaws. Swappable batteries could erase that issue—and give electric driving a whole new edge. The world is watching. The question is: who’s next?
