BMW has made an important update to its electric sedan lineup in the United States. Starting in March 2026 production, every BMW i5 now comes with a built-in NACS charging port, the connector used by Tesla’s Supercharger network.

The change may seem small, but it significantly expands charging access for i5 drivers across North America.

BMW Standardizes NACS Across the i5 Lineup

When BMW first introduced the NACS connector on the i5, the rollout looked unusual. Only the high-performance i5 M60 included the Tesla-style port, while the eDrive40 and xDrive40 models still used the CCS charging standard.

That difference is now gone.

BMW confirmed that all U.S.-market i5 vehicles produced from March 2026 onward will feature the NACS connector directly from the factory. Every trim level now uses the same charging interface.

The move reflects a broader shift happening across the EV industry as more automakers adopt Tesla’s charging format.

Supercharger Access Becomes Simpler

With the native NACS port, the i5 can take advantage of Plug & Charge technology when using Tesla Superchargers.

Drivers only need to plug the cable into the car. The system then automatically verifies the vehicle and processes payment through the My BMW mobile app, which connects to a Shell Recharge account.

Once the account includes a payment method, charging begins automatically. There is no need to scan apps or activate the station manually.

BMW Includes Adapters for Wider Compatibility

Even though the i5 now uses the NACS connector, BMW ensures drivers can still charge at stations that rely on CCS hardware.

Each new i5 delivered with the NACS port includes two adapters:

  • One for AC charging stations
  • One for DC fast chargers using CCS connectors

Because of this, drivers can still connect to older charging infrastructure when needed.

Additionally, BMW provides 1,000 kWh of complimentary charging at Electrify America, valid for up to two years. Many Electrify America locations already offer NACS cables, but the included adapter keeps CCS stations usable.

What Current i5 Owners Should Know

Drivers who purchased earlier versions of the i5 will not automatically receive the new hardware.

Vehicles built with CCS ports require a separate adapter to connect with NACS-based chargers. BMW recommends a compatible adapter currently sold by Lectron.

However, BMW plans to release a remote software update that will allow CCS-equipped 2026 i5 models to access Tesla Superchargers.

The update is expected to roll out during the spring.

Another Step Toward a Unified EV Charging Future

As more automakers move toward the NACS connector, the North American charging landscape is rapidly becoming more standardized.

BMW’s update ensures the i5 stays aligned with that transition—making fast charging easier and road trips simpler for future owners.
