BYD’s Next Global Move May Start in Canada

BYD’s Next Global Move May Start in Canada

BYD shifts its expansion map

BYD is looking at Canada as part of its next manufacturing push. The company is studying whether the country could support a future vehicle plant, though no final commitment has been made.

What stands out is BYD’s preferred approach. The automaker appears to favor full control of any factory it builds rather than sharing operations through a joint venture. That fits the way BYD has grown so far. It likes to keep production decisions, supply chain planning, and execution close to home.

The company is keeping more than one path open

A new factory is only one option. BYD is also open to buying an established automaker if the right deal appears. That does not mean an acquisition is near. However, it shows how broadly the company is thinking as it expands outside China.

That possibility comes at a time when several long-standing car brands face pressure from both sides. They still rely on combustion vehicles, yet they also need to spend heavily on EV development. BYD enters this moment from a different position. It already sells both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models at scale, which gives it more flexibility than many rivals.

BYD is looking away from the U.S.

The U.S. is not the company’s focus right now. Instead, BYD is putting more energy into regions where it sees a clearer path to growth. South America and Europe appear to be central to that plan.

Brazil has become one of the clearest examples of BYD’s overseas momentum. The company sees that progress as a template for other markets. Meanwhile, it is ramping up operations in Hungary and also considering another project in Turkey as part of its wider European push.

New tech may support the next phase

BYD’s overall sales fell during the first two months of the year, but its export business kept moving forward. The company now wants to sell 1.3 million vehicles abroad in 2026.

To support that goal, BYD is leaning on fresh technology. Recent launches include an updated Blade Battery and a new ultra-fast charging system. The company is also expanding charging infrastructure in Brazil and reviewing future opportunities in motorsport. Put it all together, and BYD’s strategy looks bigger than simple market entry. It is building a global EV presence from several angles at once.
