Range Rover Takes Aim at Porsche
Land Rover is taking a bold step into the premium EV fastback space. The upcoming Range Rover Velar EV isn’t just a new electric SUV—it’s a direct challenge to luxury rivals like the Porsche Macan EV and even the Taycan Cross Turismo. With a lower, sleeker profile and coupe-like design, the Velar EV is set to redefine what a Range Rover can be.
A New Look, A New Platform
Gone is the traditional SUV shape. The next-gen Velar rides lower, with a sportier, fastback silhouette that sets it apart from its boxier siblings. Under the hood—or rather, under the floor—sits Jaguar Land Rover’s all-new 800-volt EVA platform, offering rapid charging up to 350 kW. Expect serious improvements in range and efficiency.
This new platform will also support upcoming models like the next Evoque and a new Defender Sport. But the Velar EV leads the charge, possibly arriving with a 100 kWh battery and up to 372 miles (600 km) of WLTP range.
Sleek, Smart, and All-Electric
Spy shots and renderings reveal a refined, tech-forward design. The Velar EV keeps Range Rover’s luxury DNA but adds sharper aerodynamics and digital flair. Think hidden handles, flush surfaces, and a minimalist interior—likely packed with the latest infotainment and driver-assist features.
Competition Heats Up
The mid-size electric crossover market is heating up. While Tesla’s Model Y remains a best-seller, it’s losing ground to newcomers like the Porsche Macan EV and Zeekr 7X. The Velar EV enters this crowded field with Range Rover prestige, high-end tech, and a distinctly road-focused approach.
A Smart Gamble or a Bold New Era?
Range Rover hasn’t confirmed if the Velar name will survive this transformation. But whether it’s rebadged or not, the mission is clear: build a sleek, luxurious EV that’s just as comfortable eating up highway miles as it is turning heads.
Will it beat Porsche at its own game? We’ll find out soon enough.
