Chevy Equinox EV Recalled Over Braking Flaw

Chevy Equinox EV Recalled Over Braking Flaw

The Problem

General Motors is recalling 2,890 Chevrolet Equinox EVs in the U.S. due to a software glitch in the adaptive cruise control (ACC) system. This flaw prevents the system from fully applying the brakes when deceleration is required, relying solely on regenerative braking instead. Affected models include all-wheel-drive variants built between July 25, 2024, and December 6, 2024, without Super Cruise, GM’s advanced driver-assistance system.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the vehicles may not sufficiently slow down or stop when ACC is engaged, posing a safety risk. Drivers are advised to stay alert and manually apply the brakes when necessary.

The Fix

GM is addressing the issue with a software update for the brake control module. Unsold vehicles will receive the update via over-the-air (OTA) fixes, while owners of affected cars must visit dealerships for the repair. Models built after December 6, 2024, already feature the updated software and are not part of the recall.

Equinox EV’s Popularity

The Chevrolet Equinox EV has become GM’s top-selling electric model, with nearly 30,000 units sold last year. Priced at $35,000, the cost drops to $27,500 for buyers eligible for federal EV tax credits.

Despite its strong sales performance, this marks the third recall for the Equinox EV since its launch. Such recalls highlight the challenges of integrating advanced technology into electric vehicles and ensuring software reliability.

What Drivers Should Know

This recall underscores the importance of remaining vigilant while using Level 2 driver-assist systems like ACC, which still require manual intervention. While the technology offers convenience, it is not yet foolproof.

GM’s swift action to address the issue reflects its commitment to safety and reliability. With the fix underway, the Equinox EV remains a significant player in the growing electric SUV market, offering advanced features at an accessible price.
