Choosing the Right Level 2 Home EV Charger

Choosing the Right Level 2 Home EV Charger

Installing a Level 2 EV charger at home is a smart investment, but with different plug types, rebates, and future compatibility concerns, choosing the right one can be confusing. If you’re currently charging a Tesla Model 3 but want flexibility for future EVs or plug-in hybrids, here’s what you need to consider.

J1772 vs. NACS: Which Plug Type Should You Choose?

For now, most non-Tesla EVs use the J1772 connector, while Tesla uses NACS (North American Charging Standard). Tesla vehicles come with a J1772-to-NACS adapter, making J1772 chargers a versatile option if you plan to switch brands in the future. However, most automakers are transitioning to NACS by 2025-2026, which means newer EVs will natively support Tesla’s connector.

If you want maximum flexibility, you can:

  • Get a J1772 charger and use Tesla’s included adapter for now
  • Choose a ChargePoint Home Flex with NACS, since ChargePoint allows cable swaps if you need J1772 in the future
  • Future-proof with a Tesla Universal Wall Connector, which includes a built-in J1772 adapter

Rebates and Cost Considerations

Some utility companies, like PGE, offer rebates for specific chargers. In this case, ChargePoint qualifies for a $300 rebate, while Tesla’s charger does not. This makes ChargePoint a more cost-effective option, especially if you’re open to using an adapter.

Reliability and Safety

When choosing a charger, make sure it is UL-certified and from a trusted brand. ChargePoint, Tesla, and Flo are well-rated options with good track records. Avoid cheap, off-brand adapters, as they may pose safety risks.

Final Recommendation

If you want to take advantage of the rebate and ensure future compatibility, a ChargePoint J1772 charger with a Tesla adapter is a solid choice. However, if you expect to own only NACS-compatible vehicles in the future, a ChargePoint NACS charger or Tesla Universal Wall Connector may be the better long-term investment.

With automakers shifting to NACS, the best choice depends on how soon you plan to switch EV brands. Flexibility today or future-proofing tomorrow—what matters most to you?
