Tesla has reintroduced free lifetime Supercharging for buyers of the Model S in the USA. This legendary perk applies to new purchases or leases made on or after December 13, 2024. For EV enthusiasts, this deal is a nostalgic nod to Tesla’s earlier days and a powerful reason to consider the flagship sedan
The benefit, however, isn’t transferable. It stays tied to the Tesla account of the original owner, meaning it won’t move to another car, person, or order—even if the vehicle is sold later. Tesla has also set terms around this offer. Lifetime Supercharging may be revoked in cases of “excessive charging” or unpaid Supercharger-related fees, though Tesla hasn’t clarified what qualifies as “excessive.”
A Limited-Time Incentive
Tesla’s new offer only applies to the Model S. Model X buyers, on the other hand, will receive a more modest incentive of 3 months of free Supercharging with new purchases. However, Tesla allows buyers to stack this deal with other promotions currently available.
A Throwback to Tesla’s Early Strategy
Free lifetime Supercharging has strong ties to Tesla’s history. When the Model S launched in 2012, this feature was included as a standard perk. It helped attract buyers and establish Tesla as a major player in the electric vehicle market.
As Tesla expanded, maintaining free Supercharging became unsustainable. By early 2017, the company phased it out to ensure the financial stability of its growing Supercharger network, which now includes thousands of stations worldwide.
Since then, Tesla has occasionally revived free Supercharging as a limited-time incentive to drive sales during key periods. In some cases, Tesla even allowed the transfer of free Supercharging benefits to new vehicles, further enticing loyal customers.
A Price Hike Comes with the Perk
While free lifetime Supercharging is a significant incentive, it doesn’t come without a catch. On the same day Tesla announced the offer, prices for both the Model S All-Wheel Drive (AWD) and the high-performance Plaid version increased by $5,000 in the U.S.
This price adjustment balances out the long-term savings on charging costs. Buyers will need to weigh the value of free Supercharging against the higher upfront price tag.
