Ferrari Delays EV #2 — Here’s Why

Ferrari Delays EV #2 — Here's Why

Ferrari Puts Second EV on Ice Until 2028

Ferrari is pumping the brakes on its next electric car. Originally scheduled for late 2026, the launch has now been postponed by at least two years. Insiders point to sluggish demand for high-end electric sports cars as the main reason behind the move.

Market Interest? Almost Zero

According to sources close to Ferrari’s roadmap, demand for electric Ferraris is virtually non-existent right now. One insider bluntly told Reuters that the current appetite is “zero.” Internally, the second EV is seen as a “game changer” — just not one for the immediate future. Ferrari won’t greenlight the project without a clear business case.

First EV Still Rolling Out

The company’s first electric vehicle, however, is still on track. A soft reveal will happen this October, with a full debut in spring 2026. Deliveries are expected to begin by October that year.

Rumored to be co-designed by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, the model won’t be an SUV, but it will be larger than a typical Ferrari. And expensive — priced well north of $500,000. Ferrari sees it more as a statement than a volume seller.

Performance Still Matters

Across the industry, performance EVs face similar struggles. Weight, muted power delivery, and no engine roar dampen the excitement. For Ferrari — where driving feel and sound are everything — this is a huge barrier.

Lamborghini has delayed its first EV until 2029. Maserati canceled its electric MC20. Even Porsche is scaling back EV production as demand softens.

Legacy Over Hype

Ferrari had hoped to hit 5% EV sales by 2026. That number now looks far-fetched. But Maranello isn’t rushing. The company is reportedly developing a virtual gearbox and a simulated exhaust system to preserve its signature feel — electric or not.

Ferrari’s message is clear: when it comes to EVs, they’ll move fast only when the world is ready.
