First-Ever Flying Car Hits Production in California (Yes, Really)

The Future Just Took Off

Flying cars are no longer a fantasy.
California-based startup Alef Aeronautics is officially building the world’s first electric flying cars by hand — right now, in Silicon Valley.

Forget renders and vaporware. The company has moved from concept to production, with the first models rolling out for real-world testing.

From Sci-Fi to Drive-Fly

Alef has spent nearly a decade on this mission.
After revealing a prototype in 2016, it attracted investment from early Tesla backer Tim Draper. That funding helped turn the dream into something functional, and more importantly — street legal.

The Model A, unveiled in 2022, is fully electric. It can drive 220 miles and fly up to 110 miles.
It looks like a car, drives like a car, and yes — it vertically takes off like a drone.

FAA Approval? Check.

Last year, the Model A received Special Airworthiness Certification from the FAA — a first for vehicles of this kind.
Shortly after, Alef began accepting pre-orders from individuals and dealerships.

In a viral video, the ultralight Model A even jumped over a Tesla Cybertruck — proof the car can lift off from a regular road.

Hand-Made in California

Alef confirmed this week it has started manufacturing the first batch of Model A units. Each one is being hand-built at its Silicon Valley facility.

The first customers — a small group of early adopters — will use them for pilot testing in real-world environments. Alef plans to support them with training and feedback channels before ramping up broader production.

Price Tag? Sky High

With 3,500+ pre-orders and a starting price of $299,999, this isn’t for the everyday commuter — yet.
Still, interest is massive. Alef estimates the current order value at $1 billion.

You can reserve one today with a $150 deposit, or skip the line with a $1,500 priority slot. First deliveries are expected in 2026.
