The Future Is Lifting Off
Alef Aeronautics, a California-based startup, is preparing to launch what it calls the first true electric flying car. Unlike previous prototypes that were more spectacle than substance, Alef’s Model A is designed to be both street-legal and capable of vertical takeoff. And it’s 100% electric. The company believes this is the start of a new era in mobility—one where flying vehicles are not just for science fiction or ultra-wealthy tech moguls.
Meet the Model A
First revealed in 2022, the Model A boasts a 110-mile flight range and up to 220 miles of combined travel range. Since then, interest has skyrocketed. Alef reports over 3,400 pre-orders, valued at around $1 billion. These orders come from individuals and businesses alike, including a California car dealership—the first to ever accept pre-orders for an aircraft. Production of early customer models is now underway in Silicon Valley, with first deliveries expected by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
What Sets It Apart
Classified as an ultralight aircraft, the Model A bypasses the need for a pilot’s license. It’s still subject to restrictions, such as daylight-only flying and avoidance of populated urban areas. However, what truly makes it stand out is its claimed efficiency. Alef says the flying car uses less energy per trip than a Tesla or any other traditional electric vehicle on the market.
Today’s Price, Tomorrow’s Corolla
With an initial price tag of $300,000, the Model A certainly isn’t cheap. But Alef has big plans to bring costs down. The company hopes mass production will eventually reduce the price to levels comparable with a Toyota Corolla or Ford Focus. Their next model, the Model Z, is expected to launch around 2035 with a target price of $35,000.
A Real Takeoff
Earlier this year, Alef released video footage of the Model A lifting off from a street and hopping over another vehicle. Critics questioned its authenticity, but Alef stands by it as the first real-world demonstration of vertical takeoff by a street-legal car.
What’s Next
Backed by aerospace manufacturing partners like PUCARA Aero, Alef is pushing forward. A major technical update was just announced, and the company shows no signs of slowing down. The electric vehicle revolution may soon take to the skies.
