Living Without a Fast Charger: How EV Owners Make It Work

Fast-charging stations are becoming more common, but some EV owners still live far from the nearest one. For those without easy access, road-tripping and daily charging require creativity. So, how do they manage?

Charging Beyond the Grid

Many EV drivers rely on home charging, making fast chargers unnecessary for daily use. However, for long trips, options can be limited. Some owners use campgrounds with RV outlets for Level 2 charging, while others turn to homeowners offering power via apps like PlugShare.

One user noted that fast chargers are sparse in central Montana, while others highlighted gaps in Idaho, Nevada, and parts of Alabama. However, most agreed that finding Level 2 charging is easier than ever, even in remote areas.

Older EVs Without Fast Charging

Not all EVs have DC fast-charging capabilities. A few users shared experiences with early Tesla models and other older EVs that lack Supercharging or CCS support. They manage by planning ahead and relying on slower charging solutions.

One Tesla Roadster owner joked, “My car doesn’t even have a fast-charge port, so I win.” Others recalled declining Tesla’s $2,000 Supercharging upgrade years ago, making long-distance travel more challenging today.

Are Remote Areas Still a Problem?

While charging networks have expanded, some regions remain underserved. Users pointed out that West Virginia, Montana, and the Dakotas still have large gaps. Even in urban areas, chargers can be inconveniently located, overcrowded, or unavailable.

For extreme cases, some off-grid EV owners have considered solar panels as a backup. One adventurous driver even dreamed of crossing the country using only solar-charged power.

The Future of EV Accessibility

With federal and private investment in charging infrastructure, remote areas are slowly gaining coverage. While some drivers still face challenges, the days of getting “stranded” in an EV are becoming rarer.

For now, living far from a fast charger isn’t impossible, but it does require a bit of planning, patience, and creativity.
