Maserati Cancels Electric MC20 Folgore Due to Low Demand

Maserati has officially canceled the MC20 Folgore, its planned all-electric supercar, citing a lack of consumer interest. This decision raises questions about the brand’s ambitious EV transition, despite previous commitments to an all-electric lineup by 2028.

Weak Demand Halts Production

First reported by Evo, Maserati confirmed that the MC20 Folgore project was scrapped due to insufficient demand in the super sports car market. The company initially planned to electrify every model by 2025 and phase out gas engines entirely by 2028. However, the cancellation suggests that Maserati may be reevaluating its EV strategy.

In an official statement, Maserati explained: “The project was stopped due to the current forecast for insufficient demand in the super sports car market for a battery electric vehicle.”

Maserati’s EV Plans Move Forward—For Now

Despite canceling the MC20 Folgore, Maserati is still pushing forward with electrification. The brand has already launched electric versions of the Grecale SUV, GranTurismo coupe, and GranCabrio convertible. Future EVs, including the Quattroporte sedan and Levante SUV, are still expected, but Maserati has yet to provide firm updates.

The Folgore badge, which means “lightning” in Italian, remains the branding for Maserati’s electric lineup. However, the MC20 Folgore’s cancellation could indicate that demand for high-performance electric supercars is lower than anticipated.

Luxury EV Market Faces Challenges

Maserati isn’t the only luxury brand struggling with EV adoption. Bentley’s CEO, Frank-Steffen Walliser, stated in a 2024 interview that the luxury market has been slow to embrace electric vehicles. Despite this, Bentley still plans to introduce its first EV in 2027 and transition to an all-electric lineup by 2035.

Porsche, another major player in luxury EVs, has also admitted that the EV transition is taking longer than expected, even with the success of the Taycan and upcoming Macan EV.

What’s Next for Maserati?

The MC20 Folgore’s cancellation suggests that Maserati may be adjusting its electrification roadmap. While the brand remains committed to EVs, this move signals a more cautious approach to high-performance electric models.

For now, Maserati enthusiasts hoping for an all-electric supercar experience will have to look elsewhere.
