Mercedes-Benz AMG Reveals Standalone Electric SUV

Mercedes-Benz AMG Reveals Standalone Electric SUV

Mercedes-Benz has revealed a teaser for its first standalone electric SUV designed exclusively by AMG. This marks a historic shift as AMG, known for its performance-focused variants of Mercedes models, takes on the challenge of building an SUV entirely from the ground up. Built on the innovative AMG.EA platform, this SUV is one of two electric models planned for the division’s next phase of high-performance EVs.

AMG has a legacy of launching unique models like the GT Coupe, SL Roadster, and SLS AMG sports car. However, this electric SUV is a bold new step in blending AMG’s iconic performance pedigree with cutting-edge EV technology.

A Design That Stands Out

The camouflaged prototype confirms AMG’s commitment to bold design. It mirrors the sleek silhouette first revealed in concept sketches last month. The front features a prominent grille, with a hood and arcing headlights that deliver a striking and aggressive look. Despite having different cooling needs from combustion engines, AMG stays true to its design philosophy.

Cold-Weather Testing in Progress

Mercedes has confirmed that testing is proceeding on schedule. The prototype is now in the Arctic Circle for rigorous cold-weather trials, following a similar path to the AMG.EA-based fastback sedan tested earlier this year. This sedan, rumored to replace the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, is expected to hit showrooms next year, with the electric SUV arriving soon after.

Cutting-Edge Technology

Both AMG.EA models will likely use axial-flux motors from British firm Yasa, which Mercedes acquired in 2021. These motors promise efficiency and high performance. Mercedes has also hinted at a “high-performance battery concept,” possibly featuring mixed cell types for enhanced range and durability.

The Road Ahead

In addition to these models, AMG is reportedly considering an electric supercar inspired by the Vision One-Eleven concept and an AMG version of the 2026 CLA EV. This standalone SUV represents a bold evolution for AMG and a clear step toward the electrified future of performance vehicles.
