Sony and Honda Cancel AFEELA EV Launch Plans

Sony and Honda Cancel AFEELA EV Launch Plans

Joint Venture Pulls the Plug on Its First Electric Vehicles

Sony Honda Mobility has made a surprising decision. The company will cancel development and launch plans for its first AFEELA electric vehicles.

The announcement ends the planned rollout of AFEELA 1 and a second EV model, both of which were expected to represent Sony and Honda’s first major step into the premium electric vehicle market.

The decision follows internal discussions between Sony and Honda after Honda recently reviewed and adjusted its broader electrification strategy.

Why the AFEELA EV Program Was Cancelled

Sony Honda Mobility explained that the change stems directly from Honda’s updated EV strategy announced earlier in March.

When the joint venture launched in 2022, both companies planned to combine Honda’s vehicle engineering and manufacturing expertise with Sony’s software, entertainment, and sensor technologies.

However, the updated strategy means some of the technology and resources Honda originally planned to supply are no longer available.

As a result, the company concluded it could not move forward with the vehicles as originally designed.

Without those components and development support, the project no longer had a clear path to production.

AFEELA Was Meant to Be a High-Tech EV Brand

Sony Honda Mobility introduced the AFEELA brand as a next-generation mobility platform.

The vehicles aimed to combine advanced driver-assistance systems, digital entertainment, cloud services, and high-end EV performance.

The first model, AFEELA 1, had already begun accepting reservations in California, signaling early interest from EV buyers in the United States.

However, with development now cancelled, the company will fully refund reservation deposits to customers.

What Happens to Sony Honda Mobility Now

While the current vehicle programs are ending, Sony Honda Mobility is not shutting down entirely.

The company said it will continue evaluating future business strategies together with Sony and Honda.

That means new projects or mobility initiatives could still emerge later.

However, the cancellation of AFEELA’s first vehicles marks a significant setback for the joint venture’s original vision.

A Sign of Shifting EV Strategies

The EV industry is evolving quickly. Automakers continue to reassess investments, timelines, and partnerships as competition intensifies.

Sony and Honda entered the market with ambitious plans to merge automotive engineering with consumer electronics innovation.

For now, those plans are on hold.

And the abrupt end of the first AFEELA vehicles highlights how rapidly strategies can shift in the global race toward electric mobility.
