Tesla Model YL spotted in US

Model YL test mule appears in California

A Tesla Model YL prototype has been spotted driving on Interstate 280 in the San Francisco Bay Area, marking the first confirmed sighting of the stretched 6-seat SUV on US roads. The highway runs near Tesla’s Palo Alto headquarters and Fremont factory, a common testing corridor for pre-production vehicles.

The sighting strongly suggests Tesla is actively preparing the Model YL for the North American market, despite earlier uncertainty about its US availability.

What the Model YL is

The Model YL is a longer-wheelbase version of the Model Y, originally launched in China in 2025. It adds roughly 150 mm of wheelbase and uses a 2-2-2 six-seat layout with captain’s chairs, aimed at improving third-row comfort compared to the standard Model Y.

In markets where it is already sold, the Model YL has proven popular, accounting for about one-third of Model Y sales in China and expanding into regions like Australia and Southeast Asia.

US launch uncertainty

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously suggested the Model YL might never come to the US, citing future autonomy reducing the need for larger passenger-focused vehicles. However, that view is increasingly at odds with Tesla’s lineup changes, including the planned discontinuation of the Model S and Model X.

With those vehicles leaving the lineup, the Model YL would fill a major gap as Tesla’s only true 6-seat option.

Why the sighting matters

Prototype testing on US roads typically signals late-stage development and market preparation. Earlier clues from Giga Texas showed possible Model YL bodies-in-white being shipped from China, but public road testing suggests a more advanced US rollout plan.

The Model YL already has European approval and has been expanding globally, increasing pressure on Tesla to bring it to its largest market.

Bigger picture

The Model YL could become an important addition for Tesla as demand grows for larger electric SUVs in North America. Competing models from Hyundai, Kia, and Volkswagen are gaining traction, and Tesla currently lacks a true three-row EV beyond a limited Model Y configuration.

If US production proceeds, the Model YL could arrive as early as late 2026 or 2027, potentially becoming a key volume model in Tesla’s SUV lineup.
