Trump Team Raises the Bar for EV Chargers

America First, Now in EV Charging

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has announced a major overhaul of federal EV charger rules. Under the new Buy America proposal, chargers built with federal money must be made entirely in the United States. This raises the required domestic content from 55% to 100%.

Once finalized, the rule applies immediately to all EV chargers funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)—from purchase to installation.

“They talked big, but delivered little. We’re cutting red tape, building faster, and now making sure it’s all made in America,” said Secretary Duffy.
He claims the Trump administration has already doubled the number of charging ports completed under Biden’s program, and now aims to boost U.S. manufacturing and national security.

Securing Jobs and Infrastructure

FHWA Administrator Sean McMaster backed the move, saying the past administration failed to deliver on EV charger goals while hurting domestic industry.

The Trump team believes U.S. manufacturers now have the ability to meet 100% domestic content requirements. The waiver would ensure every federally funded charger—from wiring to casing—is American-made.

National Security & Industry Pressure

Beyond job creation, officials say the shift also tackles cybersecurity threats posed by foreign components. The waiver eliminates the use of charger parts sourced from nations with potential security risks.

The updated rule reflects pressure on manufacturers to move supply chains back home. Officials believe the industry has had enough time to scale U.S.-based production.

Final Word

This isn’t just a policy shift—it’s a message. If EV chargers are funded by American taxpayers, they’ll be built in America. No exceptions.
