Vinfast has issued a recall for 4,888 VF 8 electric SUVs due to a safety defect in the driver’s seat airbag. The flaw could lead to improper deployment, potentially injuring the driver during a side impact.
The Issue: Airbag Deployment Flaws
The affected SUVs, from model years 2023 to 2025, feature a center airbag mounted on the driver’s seat. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the airbag’s cushion shape and inflation angle allow it to deploy between the driver’s arm and torso in certain situations. This improper deployment could result in injuries.
Vinfast acknowledged the defect after an NHTSA test in June 2024. The automaker collaborated with the agency to redesign the airbag with an improved shape and deployment angle to address the issue.
Recall Details and Customer Support
Vinfast is taking swift action to resolve the problem. Dealers and service centers will replace the defective airbags free of charge. Notification letters will be mailed to owners starting January 20, 2025.
For additional details, owners can contact Vinfast’s customer service at 1-833-503-0600. The company is also transitioning to a franchised dealer model, which could improve service accessibility for its growing customer base.
Challenges with the VF 8’s Launch
The VF 8 marks Vinfast’s entry into the U.S. market, but its journey has been rocky. Early reviews criticized its underdeveloped features and performance, suggesting the vehicle wasn’t ready for market. While Vinfast made updates, such as adding a Sony entertainment system, they didn’t address the SUV’s core issues.
Sales have fallen short of expectations, and the company delayed construction of its North Carolina factory earlier this year. Despite these setbacks, Vinfast is pressing forward with the release of its three-row VF 9 SUV.
A Step Toward Improvement
This recall highlights the growing pains of a new automaker entering a competitive EV market. By addressing the airbag issue promptly, Vinfast aims to rebuild trust and ensure safety. As the brand continues to expand its lineup and refine its vehicles, resolving these challenges will be critical to its success.
The VF 8 recall serves as both a lesson and an opportunity for Vinfast to reinforce its commitment to safety and quality in the evolving EV landscape.
