Volkswagen Quietly Hits a Major EV Milestone

Volkswagen Quietly Hits a Major EV Milestone

Electric vehicle headlines often focus on setbacks and uncertainty. Yet the global EV story is far more balanced. Several traditional automakers continue to expand their electric footprint—and Volkswagen is one of the clearest examples.

The German manufacturer recently announced a major milestone: two million electric vehicles sold worldwide. The landmark vehicle? An ID.3 hatchback, one of Volkswagen’s core electric models.

Importantly, that number reflects Volkswagen brand sales only, excluding other VW Group marques such as Audi or Porsche.

A Rapid EV Ramp-Up

Volkswagen has explored electric vehicles for over a decade. However, the majority of its sales arrived only in recent years with the launch of its modern ID lineup.

The ID.3 alone has reached about 628,000 global deliveries. Meanwhile, the ID.4 and ID.5 crossovers—two of VW’s most practical electric offerings—have together surpassed 901,000 units.

Another rising star is the ID.7, available as both a sedan and a wagon. Since its debut in 2023, it has already recorded around 132,000 sales, making it one of the brand’s fastest-growing electric models.

Together, these vehicles form the backbone of Volkswagen’s EV expansion.

Europe Is Driving the Growth

From a U.S. perspective, Volkswagen’s EV progress can appear uneven. In America, the company currently sells only two electric models: the ID.4 crossover and the ID. Buzz electric van.

However, both vehicles have faced production disruptions and recalls. As a result, sales momentum has fluctuated in this market.

Europe tells a different story.

Volkswagen has become Europe’s largest EV seller, surpassing Tesla in the region. Demand continues to rise as well. The company’s European EV sales jumped roughly 50% last year, reaching 247,900 units.

Globally, Volkswagen delivered about 382,000 fully electric vehicles in 2025, maintaining strong output despite industry turbulence.

The Next Phase: Affordable EVs

Volkswagen’s next strategy focuses on expanding its EV lineup—especially at lower price points.

One key arrival is the upcoming ID. Polo, expected to start around €25,000. The model aims to bring electric mobility into the small-car segment where affordability matters most.

In fact, Volkswagen plans to introduce four compact electric models by 2026. These vehicles will target everyday drivers who want practical EVs priced closer to traditional cars.

According to Volkswagen sales chief Martin Sander, the goal is simple: make electric vehicles accessible to more customers while continuing the company’s transformation.

If that strategy works, Volkswagen’s quiet EV momentum may become one of the industry’s most significant success stories.
