What Tesla Isn’t Saying About the New Model Y

Tesla’s Budget SUV May Be Closer Than We Think

Tesla is reportedly preparing a lower-cost version of the Model Y, and it might already be hiding in plain sight. umors from China suggest the new variant—internally codenamed “E80”—will begin production at Giga Shanghai this May.

What’s got everyone talking? The price. Some reports hint at a starting range of just ¥150,000–¥170,000 ($20,500–$23,300)—well below the current Model Y price in China. And while this version may skip a few luxuries, it’s shaping up to be one of the most important Tesla launches this year.

What’s Being Trimmed Down?

To hit that price, the Model Y “E80” will likely shed some premium features. Expect fabric seats, no seat heating or ventilation, no rear display, and manual trunk operation. It may also use single-pane windows and fewer interior speakers.

While these changes may seem like a step back, they represent a strategic move to keep the Model Y accessible without losing Tesla’s signature performance or software experience.

Tesla’s Playbook Is Already in Action

Tesla has used this approach before. In Mexico, a lower-spec Model 3 dropped features like ambient lighting, rear displays, and leather seats to offer a more competitive price.

The Cybertruck Long Range RWD did something similar, offering simplified interiors for $10,000 less than the AWD version. These models still deliver the Tesla experience, just with fewer frills.

Will It Still Feel Like a Tesla?

That’s the key question. But Tesla’s success lies in software, range, and design—not just heated seats. The “E80” may miss a few creature comforts, but for budget-conscious buyers, this could be the most practical Model Y yet. And since Giga Shanghai exports globally, this version might not stay in China for long.
