Rivian is entering a different phase
For Rivian, the R2 is more than a new model. It is the vehicle that could decide how far the brand can stretch beyond its early premium audience. Until now, Rivian has been known for larger, higher-priced electric vehicles. The R2 changes that by moving into a more competitive and more accessible section of the market.
The company says the new midsize SUV will arrive in several versions over time. Pricing starts higher at launch, then moves down later with more basic trims. That rollout gives Rivian a way to enter a lower price band without giving up the performance image that helped establish the brand.
The lineup starts with the quickest version
The first model due is the R2 Performance in spring 2026. Rivian says this dual-motor all-wheel-drive version with the Launch Package will start at $57,990. Output reaches 656 horsepower, and the company estimates a 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds.
Later in 2026, Rivian plans to add the R2 Premium at $53,990. That version keeps dual-motor AWD, delivers 450 horsepower, and targets up to 330 miles of EPA-estimated range.
Then, in the first half of 2027, the R2 Standard arrives. Rivian says this rear-wheel-drive Long Range trim will start at $48,490, make 350 horsepower, and reach as much as 345 miles of estimated range. Another Standard trim priced around $45,000 is expected in late 2027.
Practicality matters as much as performance
Rivian says the R2 sits on a shorter wheelbase than the R1 and weighs nearly 2,000 pounds less. That should make it easier to manage in everyday driving, especially in tighter urban settings. Still, the SUV keeps 9.6 inches of ground clearance, so Rivian is clearly trying to preserve real trail capability.
The cabin also leans heavily into flexibility. Rivian lists 90.1 cubic feet of enclosed storage, fold-flat rear seats, dual gloveboxes, and a rear window that lowers fully into the liftgate to help carry longer gear.
Rivian is also using R2 to push its tech story
The R2 is not only about size and price. Rivian is also loading it with features that help define the brand’s next chapter. The SUV includes 200 sparse TOPS of edge AI compute, new Haptic Halo Wheels, and built-in hardware for Rivian Autonomy+.
Rivian also introduced new paint colors and interior themes, including Catalina Cove, Esker Silver, Half Moon Grey, Black Crater Signature, and Coastal Cloud Signature. The published prices apply to U.S. models only and do not include taxes or fees. Range, charging times, performance, and driver-assistance behavior can also change depending on trim, hardware, weather, tires, and driving conditions.
