Why the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Wins Globally, Struggles in the U.S.

Why the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Wins Globally, Struggles in the U.S.

A Global Star in the EV Market

Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz electric minivan is proving to be a massive hit globally. In 2025, the company saw its sales more than double, delivering 60,700 units worldwide. With strong growth in Europe and other regions, the Buzz is gaining recognition as one of the most innovative and stylish electric vans on the market. The retro design, coupled with eco-friendly features, makes it a standout in the EV space.

U.S. Struggles: High Price and Limited Range

However, the ID. Buzz has faced challenges in the U.S. market. When the van finally arrived, buyers were disappointed by its limited range and higher-than-expected price. The combination of these factors, along with a delayed launch, has slowed its growth in America. Although 7,300 units were sold in North America in 2025, that figure doesn’t fully reflect demand, given the late entry in 2024.

Different Versions, Different Markets

The ID. Buzz is available in several versions globally, offering more variety than the U.S. model. In Europe and other parts of the world, there are shorter wheelbase versions and cargo variants, which have expanded its appeal to both families and businesses. In fact, the cargo model accounts for nearly half of all global sales. This versatility has made the ID. Buzz a key player in Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle growth.

Electric Vans Gaining Ground

Volkswagen’s electric van segment grew by 118.9% in 2025, thanks in large part to the Buzz. However, electric vans still represent a small portion of the company’s overall sales. Traditional combustion-powered models, like the T-Series and Caddy, still dominate, but the ID. Buzz is pushing the company toward a more sustainable future.

What’s Next for the U.S. Market?

While the ID. Buzz won’t be available as a 2026 model in the U.S., the 2027 version is expected to make its debut soon. Volkswagen has hinted at the possibility of a more affordable version to make the van more competitive. If the company can adjust the price and improve the range, the ID. Buzz could find its place in the American market, where it remains a highly anticipated electric vehicle.
