Mona lineup expands into SUVs
XPeng is expanding its budget-focused Mona sub-brand with the new L03, its first SUV. The model appeared in Chinese regulatory filings with up to 650 km of CLTC range, an LFP battery option up to 69 kWh, and a 183 kW motor. It continues XPeng’s strategy of pushing high-spec EVs at extremely low prices.
The expected starting price is around 150,000 yuan (~$20,500), making it one of the cheapest electric SUVs in its segment. The L03 follows the success of the Mona M03 sedan and marks XPeng’s push into the larger and more profitable SUV market.
Performance and battery options
The Mona L03 BEV uses a 183 kW motor paired with LFP battery packs in 56 kWh and 69 kWh sizes. Depending on configuration, CLTC range runs from roughly 505 km to 650 km, with a top speed of 180 km/h and compact SUV dimensions similar to a Model Y.
An EREV version is also planned, adding a 1.5-liter range-extending engine for up to 257 km of electric-only CLTC range. This dual approach allows XPeng to target both pure EV buyers and drivers in regions with weaker charging infrastructure.
Ultra-low pricing strategy
The standout feature is price. At roughly $20,500, the L03 undercuts nearly every global electric SUV on the market. XPeng achieves this through cost optimization, including LFP batteries and a simplified camera-based driver assistance system instead of more expensive sensor suites.
Even with that simplification, the vehicle still includes XPeng’s VLA 2.0 vision-based ADAS system. This keeps software capabilities competitive while aggressively reducing hardware costs to hit mass-market pricing targets.
A broader SUV offensive
The L03 is only one part of XPeng’s new SUV push. The company also revealed the larger Mona L05 and flagship G9L, covering mid-size and full-size segments with shared powertrain and battery strategies.
Together, the three SUVs form a coordinated product blitz aimed at dominating China’s fast-growing EV SUV market. XPeng is clearly trying to replicate the Mona M03’s success, but at a much larger scale and across multiple vehicle classes.
