Two Affordable EVs With Real Range
For years, buying an EV with solid range meant shelling out luxury money. Not anymore. The Chevy Equinox EV and new Nissan Leaf are both here to prove that 300+ miles of range doesn’t have to cost over $35K.
These two budget-friendly electric crossovers go head-to-head—and while both are strong contenders, one clearly stands out.
Chevy Equinox EV: Bigger Battery, More Range
The Equinox EV comes with an 85 kWh battery, delivering up to 319 miles of range. It charges at 150 kW, getting from 10% to 80% in around 35 minutes. Starting at $33,600, it’s front-wheel drive standard, with optional AWD for those who want more traction.
Inside, it’s roomy and versatile—ideal for families or anyone needing more cargo space.
Nissan Leaf: Lower Price, Smarter Tech
The new Nissan Leaf (not to be confused with the outgoing version) packs a 75 kWh battery and offers 303 miles of range. Charging speeds are nearly identical to the Equinox, but it has a unique edge: it includes both a NACS fast-charging port and a J1772 plug for flexibility.
At $29,990, it’s technically cheaper—but good luck finding the base model. The real sweet spot is the SV Plus at $34,230, which adds must-have features like a heat pump, upgraded interior, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, which the Equinox lacks.
Which One’s Worth Buying?
The Equinox EV wins on size and ride comfort, but the Leaf SV Plus delivers better overall value, smarter tech options, and a lower out-the-door price if you can find the trim.
If your priority is space, go Chevy. But if you want the best tech and pricing combo under $35K, the Leaf SV Plus quietly wins the race.
Why This Matters for EV Buyers
This face-off isn’t just about two cars. It’s a sign that the EV market is finally meeting the needs of real drivers—affordability, range, and tech without compromise. Just a year or two ago, 300 miles of range at this price point was almost unheard of.
Now, drivers shopping for practical, budget-friendly EVs don’t have to settle. And that’s a major win not just for Nissan and Chevy—but for anyone ready to make the switch to electric.
