BYD Xia Minivan: 36.6 kWh Battery and 145 km Range

The latest addition to BYD’s lineup, the BYD Xia minivan, has made a splash in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its recent reveal. Unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 30, the BYD Xia will surely hit the Chinese market this year with a starting price of 300,000 yuan (approximately $42,300). This new model comes with some noteworthy specs and features that highlight BYD’s continued push into the EV and hybrid segments.

BYD Xia Minivan Battery and Range Details

One of the key highlights of the BYD Xia is its battery specifications. The minivan has a 36.6 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, which is a significant feature for its class. This battery offers a range of 145 km under the CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) standard. This is a slight reduction from earlier rumors suggesting a range of up to 200 km. The battery itself weighs 331 kg, accounting for 12.5% of the vehicle’s total curb weight of 2,650 kg.

In comparison, BYD’s Denza D9 DM-i MPV provides options for 20 kWh and 40 kWh batteries, delivering ranges of 103 km and 190–200 km, respectively. While the Xia’s range may seem modest, it aligns with the vehicle’s intended market and use case.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the hood, the BYD Xia features a 1.5-liter internal combustion engine (ICE). Although the exact peak power output is secret, it is likely to be the turbocharged BYD472ZQB engine. The latter typically produces around 115 kW (154 hp). This engine is paired with an electric motor that generates 200 kW (268 hp), providing a balanced mix of power and efficiency. The minivan has a fuel consumption rate of 6.5 L/100 km when the battery is depleted, reflecting its hybrid nature.

The BYD Xia stands out with its distinctive Dynasty design language. It boasts a large grille with chrome accents, elongated headlights, and a sleek, single taillight strip that spans across the rear. The minivan measures 5145 mm in length, 1970 mm in width, and 1805 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3045 mm. This makes it 105 mm shorter, 10 mm wider, and 115 mm lower than the Denza D9, another model in BYD’s portfolio.

Inside, the BYD Xia features a seven-seat configuration with a 2 + 2 + 3 layout. Its interior design aligns with other BYD models like the Qin L sedan and Song L DM-i crossover, showcasing a modern center console, a large suspended screen, and a D-shaped steering wheel. Additional features include the DiPilot ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), the DiLink 150 cockpit system, and the DiSus-C electromagnetic suspension system, all aimed at enhancing driver comfort and safety.

BYD Xia Minivan Pricing

The BYD Xia will enter the Chinese market later this year, with a starting price of 300,000 yuan ($42,300). This pricing places it in the competitive mid-range segment of the EV market, targeting families and consumers looking for a reliable and feature-rich minivan.

With its blend of modern design, advanced features, and hybrid efficiency, the BYD Xia has to make a significant impact in the Chinese automotive market, offering a compelling choice for those looking to transition a more eco-friendly vehicle.
