Toyota and Subaru Collaborate on New Electric SUV for 2026

Toyota and Subaru are reportedly developing a second jointly-designed electric SUV, set to debut in 2026. This upcoming model follows in the footsteps of the Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X and will be available in the U.S., Europe, and Japan.

According to a report from Nikkei, Subaru’s Yajima plant in Japan’s Gunma prefecture will spearhead production for this new electric SUV, with an estimated output of 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles per month. To streamline production costs, the new model will incorporate some components from the existing Solterra and bZ4X.

SUV Offerings

This announcement builds on previous reports indicating Subaru’s plan to collaborate with Toyota on three additional electric SUVs by 2026. Among these, a Subaru variant of Toyota’s upcoming three-row electric SUV has been mentioned, which initially will be produced in Kentucky in 2025 but has now been postponed to 2026. Additionally, Toyota will produce a second three-row electric SUV at an Indiana facility in the same year.

Before these electric models hit the market, Subaru plans to reintroduce the Crosstrek Hybrid, which previously was Toyota’s powertrain components but wasn’t available after the 2023 model year. The new Crosstrek Hybrid will reportedly share its hybrid system with the anticipated 2026 Subaru Forester Hybrid, scheduled for release next year.

Subaru’s EV Vision

In line with the industry’s shift toward electric vehicles, Subaru aims for 50% of its sales to come from EVs by 2030. The company has committed to introducing four additional battery-electric models by the end of 2028, with at least one expected in the U.S. Moreover, Subaru plans to adopt the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for its future EVs, aligning with the industry’s latest charging infrastructure developments.

In fact, Toyota and Subaru’s collaboration on electric vehicles demonstrates a strategic approach to meet growing consumer demand for sustainable transportation options. With several models on the horizon, both companies will make significant strides in the electric vehicle market.
