Audi is pushing its EV lineup into off-road territory with the new Q6 E-Tron Off-Road Concept. Designed to handle rough terrain, this upgraded version of the Q6 E-Tron features portal axles, a wider stance, and bigger tires. Could this be Audi’s answer to the growing demand for rugged electric SUVs?
Portal Axles for Extreme Capability
Unlike standard axles, portal axles reposition the wheel hub below the axle, increasing ground clearance and improving approach and departure angles. This setup allows for larger tires while also providing lower gearing, perfect for tackling steep trails and uneven terrain.
Mercedes-Benz previously tested a similar setup on its EQC 4×4² concept, which helped pave the way for the upcoming electric G-Class. Could Audi be eyeing a future all-electric off-roader of its own?
Built on the PPE Platform
The Q6 E-Tron Off-Road Concept is based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), which it shares with the A6 E-Tron and the upcoming electric Porsche Macan. This means it could retain high-speed charging capabilities while delivering strong off-road performance.
Audi previously teased the Activesphere concept, hinting at its interest in rugged EVs. With this latest reveal, the brand seems one step closer to making a true off-road-ready electric SUV a reality.
Will Audi Build It?
Currently, the Q6 E-Tron Off-Road Concept remains a one-off design study, with no official production plans. However, given the rising popularity of adventure-ready EVs, Audi could see an opportunity to compete with models like the Rivian R1S and Jeep Recon EV.
