Rivian Unlocks Hands-Free Driving & ‘Rally Mode’ in New Update

Rivian just made its R1T and R1S even better. A major software update is rolling out, bringing hands-free highway driving and an exciting Rally Mode for off-road fun. However, not all Rivian owners will get these features—they’re exclusive to second-generation R1 vehicles.

Hands-Free Driving Arrives—But Only for Some

Rivian’s new Enhanced Highway Assist allows hands-free driving on select highways, as long as the driver remains attentive. The system is similar to GM’s Super Cruise and Ford’s BlueCruise, making long road trips more comfortable.

Key Features:

  • Hands-free operation on mapped highways
  • Driver monitoring ensures safety
  • Future upgrade planned for “eyes-off” driving in 2026

Unfortunately, first-generation R1 models won’t get this update due to hardware limitations.

Rally Mode Brings More Off-Road Thrills

For those who love adventure, Rally Mode is now available on Dual-Motor Performance R1T and R1S models. It enhances traction and responsiveness on various terrains, including dirt, sand, mud, and ice.

What You Get with Rally Mode:

  • Sharper steering & faster throttle response
  • Improved handling on rough terrain
  • Available in off-road drive settings

Don’t have the Performance Pack? You can now buy it over-the-air for $5,000, unlocking 665 horsepower and 829 lb-ft of torque, plus additional drive modes like Sport and Soft Sand.

More Quality-of-Life Upgrades

Beyond major features, Rivian is adding several useful tweaks:

  • Wheel size adjustments can now be made in the settings—no service visit needed.
  • A new chime alerts drivers when the car in front moves at a stoplight.
  • Tire puncture detection warns of slow leaks before they become a problem.
  • Remote charge door control is now available via the app.

The Future Is Software-Driven

This update proves Rivian is prioritizing software innovation, making its vehicles better over time. OTA updates keep cars fresh without trips to the dealership—something the entire auto industry needs to embrace.
