Defender Goes Electric: Rugged Just Got Charged

A Rugged EV with Luxury DNA

Land Rover’s Defender is known for bold off-road performance and upscale styling. Now, it’s bringing that signature combo into the electric era. The brand is preparing to launch its first electric SUV—a smaller, entry-level model expected to be called the Defender Sport.

Despite its size, the upcoming Defender EV aims to pack a punch. It’s designed to offer a premium feel, high-riding stance, and rugged charm—while still being city-friendly.

A Compact Format with Big Intentions

At around 4.5 meters long, the Defender Sport will size up similarly to a BMW X1. It’ll slot between the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport in JLR’s lineup.

While Land Rover hasn’t confirmed if it’s replacing the Discovery Sport, many believe the Defender Sport could fill that space. The vehicle’s design is expected to include muscular wheel arches and true Defender attitude.

Built for Electric from the Ground Up

The new compact SUV will ride on JLR’s EMA platform. This architecture was developed as an EV-first chassis, giving the Defender Sport better battery integration and performance.

Although an all-electric version leads the launch, a plug-in hybrid variant could follow. Either way, the model is expected to be one of JLR’s most important new offerings.

Part of a Bigger EV Push

JLR is on a mission to electrify every brand under its umbrella. Range Rover’s first electric SUV is already coming later this year, with more than 61,000 people on the waitlist. Jaguar, Discovery, and now Defender will all get EVs.

The company admits that electrifying the current large Defender (the L663) proved too complex. So instead of adapting the old, it’s building fresh—with smaller EVs like the Defender Sport leading the charge.

The Compact Electric Off-Roader Arrives

With tough styling and a luxury badge, the Defender Sport EV could become one of the most desirable compact electric SUVs on the market. Rugged meets refined—without the gas bill.
