Ford’s next electric pickup may not be the midsize truck many shoppers expected.
The automaker now describes the upcoming model as an “affordable small electric pickup,” signaling a shift in how it wants buyers to view the truck. The EV is planned for 2027 and should start near $30,000, making it a major Ford launch.
A Smaller Truck With a Big Job
Ford first presented the project as a midsize EV pickup when it outlined its Universal EV Platform, or UEV. That platform will underpin the truck and help Ford lower costs, simplify production, and reach buyers who feel priced out of today’s electric vehicles.
However, recent Ford updates now call the model a small four-door electric pickup. It suggests the truck may land closer to a compact lifestyle pickup than a traditional midsize workhorse.
Spy photos have added fuel to that idea. Test vehicles seen near larger Ford models appear low, narrow, and much smaller than expected.
Why Ford Is Betting on Small
Ford needs this truck to do more than fill a gap. It needs to reset the company’s EV pricing story.
The F-150 Lightning proved Ford could build an electric truck. Yet it also showed how expensive full-size EV pickups can become. A smaller model with a lower starting price could bring in shoppers who want utility without luxury-truck pricing.
Ford says the UEV platform will cut complexity. The company plans to use LFP batteries and new manufacturing methods, including large structural castings. According to Ford, the platform uses two main structural castings instead of the 146 parts used in the Maverick’s structure.
More Space Than It Looks
Despite the smaller size, Ford says the flat battery layout will open up cabin space. The company claims the pickup will offer more interior room than a Toyota RAV4, not counting the bed or front trunk.
Ford has not confirmed the name yet. Still, a “Ranchero” trademark filing has sparked speculation.
If Ford gets the size, range, and price right, its small EV pickup could become a reset for affordable electric trucks.
