Many Fast Charging Adapters Are Off-Limits
DC fast charging adapters are becoming more common, but many are technically prohibited. Some charging networks have strict rules against third-party adapters, extension cables, and breakaway connectors. Using an unauthorized adapter could even get you banned from a charging network.
Tesla’s Strict Rules on Adapters
Tesla Superchargers only allow adapters sold or provided by Tesla or automakers. The company prohibits third-party adapters, extension cords, and breakaway devices. This means popular aftermarket options, such as A2Z’s extension cables or EVject’s breakaway connectors, are not allowed at Tesla Superchargers.
EVgo and Electrify America’s Policies
EVgo recently updated its terms of service to limit charging adapters to automaker-approved models with UL2252 certification. Tesla owners needing a charge at EVgo can only use the Tesla CCS1 to NACS adapter, which costs $300. Electrify America enforces the same restrictions, meaning third-party adapters are not welcome there either.
ChargePoint’s Approach to Adapters
ChargePoint takes it a step further, strongly discouraging adapters or extension cables in DC fast charging applications. A company representative stated that adapters should only be used if extensively tested and validated with the vehicle and charger. However, ChargePoint does offer an alternative—OmniPort, a built-in adapter similar to Tesla’s Magic Dock, that allows CCS1 and NACS compatibility without extra hardware.
Why Using Unauthorized Adapters Is Risky
Charging networks can’t physically block the use of third-party adapters, but if damage occurs, you could face consequences. Networks may ban users or even take legal action. Some cheap adapters pose serious risks, such as overheating and melting due to poor temperature sensor placement. Manufacturer-approved adapters, on the other hand, are built with proper safeguards to prevent failures.
The Bottom Line
While adapters make charging more convenient, using unauthorized ones can lead to safety hazards and account bans. Sticking to approved solutions ensures a reliable and secure charging experience for EV owners.
