Neue Klasse, New Ambitions
BMW is stepping back into the EV spotlight with the all-new i3 sedan, and it’s not playing nice. This next-gen 3 Series EV, built on the automaker’s cutting-edge Neue Klasse platform, is rumored to deliver up to 800km (497 miles) of range on a single charge. That’s more than any Tesla currently sold in Australia—including the 2025 Model 3 Long Range, which tops out at 750km (WLTP).
Due in late 2026 or early 2027, the i3 will first arrive as a sedan, followed by a Touring variant. Launch trims are expected to mirror the upcoming iX3, featuring 346kW of power and a 108kWh battery, with 400kW DC fast charging support.
Range Claims Under the Microscope
Online discussion has quickly zeroed in on the range figures. With a 108kWh battery—roughly 44% larger than the Model 3’s—the expectation from some enthusiasts is that the i3’s range should scale more significantly, potentially exceeding 1,000km. Instead, BMW appears to be prioritizing a balance of range, performance, and weight.
Still, many view the 800km WLTP figure as strong, even if it’s likely to drop to around 390–430 miles on the EPA cycle, especially in real-world conditions or colder climates. The overall consensus: range isn’t everything, but it’s a powerful selling point—particularly for drivers who want to minimize charging stops on long trips.
Pricing Speculation and Market Positioning
BMW has yet to confirm official pricing, but early reports suggest a starting point around $55,000 USD. If accurate, this would likely reflect a mid-to-upper trim model, possibly with dual-motor AWD and the larger battery.
Observers note that, unlike Tesla’s fixed pricing model, BMW vehicles often come with dealer-level discounts, especially in Europe. This could make the i3 more competitive than its MSRP suggests, depending on the region and final specs.
Tesla Comparisons—Still Relevant?
Although some buyers are fatigued by constant Tesla comparisons, the Model 3 remains the global benchmark for mid-size electric sedans. For many consumers, it provides a clear reference point for efficiency, price, and real-world performance.
Whether BMW intends the i3 to be a direct competitor or not, the comparison is inevitable. And in this case, it’s not just marketing fluff—the i3’s range, powertrain, and platform represent a substantial step forward that positions it as a serious contender in the EV space.
